The Maot Hittim fund is used to purchase matzah for those who cannot afford it, thus enabling them to fulfill the mitzvah of eating matzah during Pesach. This donation is traditionally done in conjunction with having the Rabbi serve as your Shaliach (emissary) in selling your chametz prior to Pesach.
